Have you ever been witness to a firefly show? I grew up in the Midwest and it's an understatement to say I am fascinated by fireflies. It is much more accurate to claim that I am obsessed.
Fireflies are cool for many reasons. I have studied fireflies informally for many years. From learning about their behavior to the energy efficient light they give off. That light is now being studied formally at UC Berkeley to see if they can recreate it.
It is the light that draws us to the firefly. That subtle, consistent blinking light is the way this little bug communicates with other fireflies. If you've had the pleasure of witnessing them, it is a beautiful, subtle, dance of survival for this species. They NEED to attract other fireflies in order to mate and continue their species through time. This communication is delivered with precision and when done right, a whole community of fireflies will blink their light in unison, as if proclaiming..."i've got your back, I'm here for you, you are not alone." It's quite inspiring. I realized when I was forming my business almost 5 years ago, that fireflies shaped my philosophy on communication and marketing hence the namesake Firefly Strategies. They communicate strategically and here's what I learned.
The Firefly Principles:
1. Consistent communication. Fireflies communicate every night, consistently and regularly. It's around the same time every night, they have a certain number of blinks per minute that change depending on various circumstances. You must communicate with your potential clients and investors. For nonprofits it would be your donors and other key people in your organization. These people are your community and you MUST communicate with your community. The consistency is what helps others to build rapport with you and it keeps you on top of mind. WHAT you are communicating helps too, for instance share what is going on in your business or organization, important news and resources, and just general communication to see how they are. These communications are not about the sell. These are about building relationships with future supporters and appreciating those that already support you. Which leads me to...
2. Build community. Fireflies know that consistent communication helps them build a community of fireflies ready to procreate. They not only communicate, they tailor their communications, or the rate at which the light blinks, to attract just the right mate. I'm sure you can see how this applies to your business or organization. How do you create more buyers and supporters? First, you've got to know who you are communicating to, your target market. Then, you tailor the communications to that market. This is the simple recipe for attracting more interest from prospective clients and supporters and the way to create a community or tribe for your work, message or product.
3. Make it authentic. 100% of the light that is created by the firefly is purely light. Naturally, this tiny bug wastes no energy on creating this light. No heat is produced when creating their glow. If they did, they would burn. This is the natural state of this bug and I preach this to my clients. Communicate in a way that is natural to you, your business and organization. Don't mimic what others are doing. When it is natural to you, it is authentic and people LOVE authentic. When it is real and doesn't seem forced, it comes out beautifully and it seems effortless. Always examine what you are putting out there and make sure it authentically represents the true nature of you, the business or organization.
Now you share your experience with me. What has inspired a way of doing or being for you? What shaped your philosophy for living? Whether that is a person, a thing or a tiny bug, I'd love to know. OR, let me know if these three Firefly Principles resonate with you. Leave a comment for me below.
